What does it take to get hospice care?

In order to receive hospice care, the attending physician must make a diagnosis of a patient's incurable illness, certifying a prognosis that the patient has six months or less (if the illness runs its normal course).  A physician and/or the family can make a direct request to A&E Hospice Care.  Our full-time medical director is also available to evaluate a patient's need for hospice care.

How do I request hospice care?

There are several ways to request hospice care.  The patient's physician can refer you to A&E, or the family can call A&E directly.

What does hospice pay for?

Hospice care includes all medications related to the incurable illness, medical supplies and equipment, nutritional supplements, and professional nursing available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Can hospice patients still see their family physicians?

Hospice services and payment benefits can still be received for care provided by your family physician.

Must hospice patients stay home, as shut-ins?

No.  Many patients are able to continue attending church, visiting relatives, and even traveling out of town.

Can patients receive hospice care anywhere?

Hospice patients receive care at their primary residence, whether it be a hospital, an assisted living facility, or at a family member's home.
